Consensus Mediation

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process that helps people in a conflict or dispute to communicate constructively and respectfully with each other and work towards resolving their difficulties in a way that meets the needs of both parties. The Mediator supports the parties in identifying their issues and needs and in exploring how those needs can be addressed and how they might come to agreement. Mediation provides a safe environment for the parties to air their issues and concerns with the other party at first hand and to hear the complaints, issues and concerns that are being made against them.

County Leitrim Peace III Partnership has commissioned  Consensus Mediation  to train 15 individuals in Leitrim as Mediators to work with the target groups of the Peace III Programme, namely ex­-political prisoners, former combatants, those displaced as a result of conflict and their families, the Travelling Community, minority ethnic communities, religious minorities, single isolated men, disadvantaged urban communities, community and voluntary groups and public sector bodies. The training will be provided free to selected individuals in the community and voluntary sector and public bodies who are members of the target groups or work with these groups.  A selection process will occur based on the applications received.

This is a unique opportunity for people with an interest in conflict resolution and positive community relations to gain the skills and qualifications necessary to enable them to work effectively in this area.

Training consists of 7 full days plus a one-day assessment carried out over a three month period commencing in mid-November, 2010. This training is accredited by the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland and participants can, upon successful completion of this course and assessment, register with the Mediators’ Institute Ireland and be approved to practice as a Mediator.
